Breakthrough in Colombia as new peace deal with Farc promised in next six months

COLOMBIA looks forward to brighter times as President Juan Manuel Santos has reached an agreement with the Farc rebels on Wednesday to sign a peace deal by March 23, 2016.

Cuba was the setting for the peace talks which have been ongoing since 2012. President Santos shook hands with Farc rebel leader Timochenko after reaching agreement on punishment for human rights abuses throughout the conflict.

Farc rebels have been fighting the government from 1964 and President Santos is looking forward to “bidding farewell to the longest-running conflict in the Americas.” Farc have agreed to surrender all weapons within 60 days of the signing of a peace deal.

Timochenko addressed his followers on the Farc Twitter feed saying “Let’s join efforts to achieve peace.”

Many details remain to be agreed upon, including questions over amnesty and punishments, and when an accord is signed it will be put before the people of Colombia in a referendum.
