TWO construction workers, aged 56 and 31, died when part of the building on which they were working in s’Arenal collapsed.
They were trapped under the rubble with another two men, aged 33 and 35, who were taken to hospital with slight injuries.
According to the emergency services, the framing of a 25m2 ceiling of the five-storey hotel fell on them while they were repairing it, leaving them trapped under a 50-tonne concrete structure. Police and firemen attempted to extract them from the rubble while they were still alive but they died shortly afterwards. Their bodies were recovered later with the use of a crane.
The police cordoned off the area and an investigation has been opened into the accident. Councillor for Work Iago Negueruela visited the site and expressed his condolences to the victims’ families.
