THE Justice of the Peace in Calvia dealt with 5,972 matters in 2014.
Just over 24 per cent of the cases were of a criminal nature, including 1,289 letters rogatory and 113 minor offence trials.
The remaining 4,390 cases were civil matters, including 3,733 letters rogatory, 96 conciliation acts, a verbal trial and 560 other matters. The Justice of Peace also registered 303 births, 234 marriages, 109 divorces and 128 deaths, and certified approximately 5,000 documents.
The Justice of the Peace (Juzgado de Paz) is the judicial body which resolves matters considered to be ‘minor’ in towns with more than 7,000 inhabitants which don’t have magistrate’s courts. They have layman judges chosen by the town hall and named by the High Court of Justice.
The mayor, Alfonso Rodriguez, visited the Justice of Peace and learned of the activities and needs they have.
