THE oddly-named ‘Eurobasket’ is not somewhere to hide overproduction of wheat, but a European championship held every two years to find the best basketball team in Europe and Spain’s men, having beaten Greece on September 15, are now due to meet France in the semi-final, which will be held in Lille.

This year’s competition is important as the winners and runners-up gain automatic qualification to the Olympic Games in Rio next year.

The championship is held every two years in a number of different countries and since 1999 Spain has been in the final three every time, winning two gold, three silver and two bronze medals in the process.

Currently 35-year-old Pau Gasol is the leading scorer in the entire championship with an average of 23.6 points per game and with the French match coming up shortly, unless there is an injury problem, he is on target to maintain his lead, especially as Spain has much better overall statistics for this championship.
