Royal Yacht Britannia which brought the Queen to Gibraltar in 1954
ON September 9, the Gibraltar Government formally congratulated Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on becoming Britain’s longest reigning monarch.
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo commented that it was fitting that this should happen a day before Gibraltar celebrates National Day, as the Rock has shown its loyalty to the British Crown for over 300 years.
He went on to add that a large number of Gibraltarians were evacuated to London during World War Two, where the Royal Family had chosen to remain, and this fostered an affinity with the Royals which lasts to the present day.
