BEEHIVES should have GPS locators, an Almeria beekeeper said.
Joaquin Abad owns 900 beehives in Abrucena, Ohanes, Fiñana and Enix as well as Granada and Ciudad Real.
Installed in isolated countryside, they are easy prey to thieves and 60 of his hives were stolen in Enix recently. Spotting them in another apiary Abad reported the theft and now has them in his possession once again but wants a lifetime ban for anyone found stealing hives.
He also advocates GPS locators: “They are less expensive now and would guarantee that hives could be found at any time. They are the future.”
