A STRIKE by Lufthansa pilots on Wednesday (September 9) forced the airline to cancel a total of 61 flights between Spain and Germany.
The pilots extended their strike, called by Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) trade union, to include short and medium length flights, forcing cancellation of 1,000 flights and affecting an estimated 140,000 passengers.
Spain saw 30 flights from and 31 flights to Germany cancelled as the Frankfurt Labour Tribunal accepted a claim for processing from the airline against VC arguing that the strike was illegitimate.
Lufthansa reported having sent 80,000 emails and text messages to customers informing them of flight changes and cancellations and issued 2,500 train tickets for passengers.
