SYRIAN REFUGEES: The council will offer 96 beds to accommodate them.

ALICANTE City has offered to temporarily host refugees in Europe.

Already the youth residence in the Florida neighbourhood is being prepared with around 96 beds ready to accommodate refugees from Syria.

It comes as the council supported the proposal by the mayor of Barcelona to offer temporary refuge to those fleeing their home countries.

The Department of Cooperation and Immigration of the city of Alicante, in collaboration with the areas of Finance, Social Welfare, Education and Historical Memory as well as citizens groups and specialised non-governmental organisations such as the UNHCR, Red Cross and the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) are calling on assistance from the Generalitat Valenciana and the central government in designing a programme of temporary accommodation and care of refugees, which involves a budget to be put in place.

The launch of the initiative also requires the implementation of such basic requirements such as legal advisory services and a group of translators and interpreters.

Alicante reminded it has historical memory of the evacuation with the British ship Stanbrook from the port of Alicante which saw thousands of refugees fleeing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War.

The news came as the image of a dead boy drowned washed up on a Turkish beach swept across the globe.
