A GERMAN tourist, 78, died in Calvia after being hit by a bin lorry.

The events took place at around 3pm on the road between Cala Fornells and Peguera when the woman went to cross the road, just as the truck went into reverse.

The driver, who was given a breath test which proved he had not been drinking alcohol, did not see her, and hit her.

She was seriously injured and despite the attempts of paramedics to resuscitate her, she died at the scene. The accident was also attended by Guardia Civil and Local Police who reported the events.

In Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, a 49-year-old resident of Son Servera, was crushed by a mechanical digger while he was working on a property. He was getting out of the cab and is believed to have slipped due to the rain, getting caught on one of the levers which caused the digger’s scoop to move and fall on him. He was taken by colleagues to a health centre where nothing could be done to save his life. Guardia Civil and work inspectors are investigating the death.
