GARBED in full dress uniform, two male members of the National Police were married at the Andalucía Royal Equestrian School in Jerez de la Frontera on Saturday September 5.
The couple, who have been in a relationship for five years, are the first gay members of the National Police to ‘plight their troth’ although they indicated that they have plenty of gay friends within the force. Gay marriage in Spain has been legal for the past 10 years.
Whilst they had intended to keep their ceremony as private as possible with just close friends and relatives attending, word leaked out on social media and the ceremony gained a great deal of coverage. One of the pair, Chema, said: “There should not be any difference between our wedding and for any other couple.”
Before Chema and his partner Jonathan left for a honeymoon in the US, they made it clear that they were looking forward to a long life together and may consider adoption at some time in the future.
