Motril stands together against gender-based violence

MAYOR of Motril, Flor Almon, together with other council representatives held a moment of silence on Sunday (August 30), to condemn the many recent episodes of violence against women and to mourn together with the victims’ relatives.

During the solemn event, held in the Plaza España, Mayor Almon described the month of August as “terrible” due to the deaths of many women, saying: “We have not recovered from one episode when, unfortunately, we are informed another one has taken place.”

The most recent such case happened on Saturday (August 29) in Noalejo (Jaen) when a 48-year-old woman from Granada is believed to have been stabbed by her husband who then took his own life.

“We need to end this scourge and continue the work by public institutions to prevent more cases to happening,” said the mayor. “All women who are suffering ill-treatment must report it as soon as possible to avoid more serious situations.”

So far this year, 25 women have already been murdered by their partners or ex-partners.

To finish, a council representative reminded people that there were two free-of-cost information phone numbers for women who are facing this kind of situation, to get legal counselling and help with other matters: 061 and 900 200 999.
