THE siege at a café in Torre del Mar has ended with the man who barricaded himself in the building, reportedly threatening to use gas bottles to cause an explosion, being escorted from the scene in the custody of police with a blanket covering his head.
Police had earlier surrounded a Torre del Mar café (Velez-Malaga), about 11am, after they’d received a call from a woman saying that her husband, aged 37, had barricaded himself into a bar with a shotgun and was threatening to commit suicide if his demands were not met.
According to Euro Weekly News’s man on the scene, who witnessed the events, SWAT teams were in put place, covering the front and back doors to the building, and helicopters circled above the tourist resort.
Our man told us that the protagonist had barricaded himself inside the café, while the local chief of police attempted to communicate with him.
The incident was all over by 4pm, with the bar barricade builder under arrest charged with public order offences and disobedience. His firearm was found to be useless.
The bar is located between Calle Copo and Avenida Duque de Ahumada.
