HUNDREDS of street vendors will be forced to find a new location for their stands when the El Campo Sunday market, which drew thousands of visitors each week, closes for good.
El Campo de Guardamar del Segura district (Orihuela), has been home for this market for the past two decades. However, it is held on rural land, which is illegal.
Mayor Jose Luis Saez will have to issue the closure notice in order not to violate a court order, which was issued back in February, but was apparently not enforced by the former government.
Saez explained that the Alicante Court was the one behind the closure, and it had been proved that illegal street vending was taking place in the area. Local Police are to cordon off the area this week.
