Efforts to save a dolphin seen in difficulties off Denia all failed. Public on Les Marines beach advised the maritime authorities when they saw the 1.5-metre long dolphin near the shore, swimming erratically and noticeably disorientated.
A patrol boat from the Marine Reserve and specialists from Valencia’s Oceanografic aquarium found the dolphin which, when approached, appeared to have no external injuries. They attempted to take it out to sea, but each time it returned to the coast and died less than a day later.
The Oceanografic experts will carry out a post-mortem to determine whether the dolphin was diseased, had been hit by a boat or was possibly confused by underwater noise.
