Motril faces museum crisis

HISTORY MUSEUM: Closed due to budget problems.

CULTURE-VULTURES who have arrived in Motril in hopes of gleaning a little local historical knowledge have been left disappointed, as half of the town’s museums are closed for the summer.

Two of the four museums in the town are currently closed for different reasons. One of them, the History Museum (Mhimo), has a poster pinned to its door which says that the closure is temporary and due to maintenance reasons.

Culture Councillor Francisco Ruiz explained that the air conditioning in the facility was broken and there was no money to fix it. It is expected it will be reopened in September.

The geology museum will also be closed until September. This facility is one of the most important cultural centres in the town as it allows visitors to experience first hand a real life mine, travelling through it with the help of a guide. A lack of personnel seems to be the reason why this museum is also shut.

Finally, the museums that remain open, the art museum Jose Hernandez Quero and the pre-industrial sugar museum, do not have guided tours available at the moment as there is also a lack of staff.
