Crab invasion worries Mar Menor fishermen

1

FISHERMEN from San Pedro del Pinatar have reported a new species of crab in the Mar Menor lagoon and urged the authorities to act now to prevent harm to native species and the ecosystem.

The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), which originally came from the Atlantic coasts of America, had been spotted once 10 years ago in the Mar Menor but not again since.

The fishermen have expressed worry about the damage the crabs could cause to their nets and also the harm they could cause to native species in the lagoon’s unique ecosystem and urged the authorities to study the possible impact of the invasive species and take steps to avoid it.
