THE oldest resident of Mojacar (Almeria) celebrates his 100th birthday on Saturday (August 22), and the Queen is amongst those sending warmest congratulations to Bertie Finch.
The Lancashire-born hero of the D-Day Normandy landings has received a telegram from HRH Queen Elizabeth, which says: “I send my congratulations and best wishes to you on such a special occasion.”
Colonel Herbert Finch played a hugely important role in the Second World War, carrying out perilous work as part of the ‘Enemy Ammunition Disposal Group,’ which later became known as the Bomb Disposal Unit.
Bertie has been a pillar of the Mojacar community for 35 years, having founded the area’s first bowling club, and formed the local branch of the British Legion alongside a few other compatriots.
Bertie will be celebrating his landmark birthday at home surrounded by family and friends, and we at the Euro Weekly News want to wish him the very happiest of days.
