THE keenly awaited renovation of Velez-Malaga’s Lope de Vega theatre is on shaky ground due to budget issues.
“The town council will not be able to meet this major investment at the moment, we are talking about almost €3 million,” said Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer.
The theatre was purchased by the former government team, led by the Partido Popular conservative party, for a price of €500,000.
Now in the opposition, head of the PP Francisco Delgado said that if the renovation were not carried out as proposed, the National Sports Gala, which was due to be hosted at this theatre in March 2016, would be at risk of being cancelled.
The current mayor replied that the government was currently negotiating the event with the organisers to find an alternative location, such as one of the two indoor sports pavilions in the town.
The project was expected to turn the Lope de Vega into the biggest theatre of the province, smaller only than the Teatro Cervantes in Malaga.
