Nijar rescue teams under pressure

MARINE Rescue teams in Nijar were kept busy on Thursday afternoon (August 20) as the engine of a yacht with four people on board caught fire and a man disappeared when his catamaran overturned.

At 2.22pm Civil Protection was alerted to an accident between Cala del Plomo and Aguamarga, with a witness reporting that man had last been seen trying to right his catamaran to no effect and had disappeared from sight.

Search teams were sent out and fishing boats in the area notified and the man was finally found clinging to a rock. Marine Rescue’s Helimer 201 helicopter was sent to carry out a dramatic rescue, complicated by strong waves and 20 knot winds.

The French man, in his 50s, was taken to the airport and sent for examination by doctors although 112 Emergency Services reported he was in good health.

While out, the helicopter also rescued a swimmer who was spotted clinging to a buoy.

Meanwhile another alert went out at 4.45pm when the engine of the yacht Taipi burst into flames, letting off thick black smoke, and a rescue boat had to be sent out to put the flames out and tow the yacht to safety in Garrucha, arriving at 8pm.
