OVER the past two decades, the Torrox coast has taken a battering from strong waves and heavy winds, often sustaining heavy damage.
With the goal of preventing severe erosion and further costs, the Spanish Environment Ministry has launched a project to redevelop the beach.
A new, semi-submerged breakwater, 115 metres long, is to be built opposite the Torrox lighthouse, for an estimated cost of €584,995.
At least 30 different companies have participated in the public tender process, with discounts on the estimated budget of up to 40 per cent. It is expected that the works will be awarded in September or October and get started before the end of this year.
Business owners in the area have been calling for such measures to be taken for several years, as arguing repeatedly that adding sand to the eroded areas was a waste of money.
