Friday August 21 sees the start of events in Gibraltar which will culminate in the National Day Celebrations on Thursday September 10, just one day after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is due to becomes Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.
For the many Gibraltarian royalists this will be an excuse for a double celebration, especially as National Day is also a Bank Holiday.
The Moorish Castle, a medieval structure part of which was formerly a prison, will be illuminated in red for the three-week run-up to National Day. Other events include a Beer Festival, Gibraltar Fair, Children’s Fancy Dress competition and street parties.
On National Day itself, there will be a formal announcement naming the recipients of the Gibraltar Medallion of Honour, the reading of the National Day Declaration, free music and a fireworks’ display.
