Some very early residents in Alcoy

ANNUAL archaeological digs have been carried out at El Salt in Alcoy for the last 25 years.

Coinciding with this anniversary more than 25 experts will share their experiences throughout August, as they pursue a common goal of finding out more about the first human who inhabited the area 60,000 years ago.

The important site is located behind the gardens of Villa Vicenta, the summer home of the Alcoy-born writer and poet Juan Gil-Albert (1904-1994).

Students from Alicante, Valencia, Burgos and La Laguna are carrying out excavations there, while widening the work zone as they search for clues to new periods of occupation following on from the Neanderthal area.
