SHIRA BANKI, 16, has died in hospital after being stabbed at a Gay Pride march on Thursday July 30 in Jerusalem. Doctors were unable to save the teenager due to the severity of her wounds, sustained during the event in which six people were attacked by a knife-wielding man, described as an ultra-Orthodox Jew.
Her suspected attacker, Yishai Schlissel, had not long been released from prison after serving a sentence for a similar attack at the Gay Pride march in Israel in 2005. He was arrested by police at the scene after he was seen taking a knife from his coat and attacking participants in the march before being tackled by police, all of which was captured in pictures.
A vigil for Shira took place near the scene where she was killed with hundreds of friends, relatives and supporters and members of the gay community attending in honour of the teenager.
