A NEW green space is to be opened up in Motril. The town council is hoping to reopen the Parque Periurbano in Cerro del Toro in 2016, or by the end of 2015. The park has been closed for almost four years, after renovation work was carried out in 2012.
News was announced by Urbanism and Environment councillor, Antonio Escamez, who explained that the town council will wait until the end of the summer season to ask the Junta de Andalucia for ownership of the park, to be able to celebrate activities related to nature, culture and leisure in the space.
Mr Escamez explained that the facilities showed several signs of damage that prevented the regional government from transferring ownership to the town council. After a while, the former local government abandoned the project, and the facilities had become more rundown since then.
A group of volunteers has already started cleaning and renovating this 20-hectare park, which has been the object of vandalism and meet-up site for the botellon (street drinking). The town council is now expecting the visit of regional government experts in September, who it is hoped will approve the use of the park.
According to the town council there are businesses that have already shown their interest in being present in the park.
“The first step to follow is to hire surveillance services so that this park is no longer a target for vandals,” said the councillor.
Within six months, the council said, the Parque Periurbano would turn into the cultural, sports and leisure epicentre of the town.
