Gibraltar swimming bronze in Special Olympics

LOCAL swimmer Francis Mauro has won Bronze at the Special Olympic World Games 2015 in LA. The games officially opened on Saturday July 25 and had just started the following day when the athlete came third in the 50 metres breaststroke.
Gibraltar has sent 22 athletes to the games along with 11 coaches and six Unified Partners. The athletes will compete in Aquatics, Athletics, Open Water Swimming, Golf, Bocce, Bowling and Unified Football.
The Special Olympics opening ceremony featured a host of stars, including Stevie Wonder, Avril Lavigne, Nicole Scherzinger to name but a few, with First Lady Michelle Obama also making a guest appearance.
The games, which is the largest sports event in the world this year, will continue until Sunday August 2. As well as the competitive events, it is offering educational and training programmes, which are open to athletes, guests and their families, and on Friday August 31 for the first time will also include a Dance Challenge, created by British producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe of the US TV show, So You Think You Can Dance.
