LOCAL and regional governments got together last week to discuss the future of one of the most important attractions in Nerja: the Chillar River.Delegate of the Junta de Andalucia regional government, Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo, held a meeting with mayor of Nerja, Rosa Arrabal, to tackle issues regarding the improvement in safety and access of the Chillar River and its surroundings. The meeting was also attended by head of the Regional Environment Department, Adolfo Moreno, and a team of experts as well as representatives of the local Civil Protection, Guardia Civil and Fire Brigade teams. As was reported by EWN by the beginning of July, the local government team had already proposed as one of its priorities the protection of this natural attraction, going as far as looking at a measure to limit the number of daily visits, after concerns were sparked over the river becoming a “kind of water park.”The first measures discussed in the meetings which are expected to be implemented shortly are the creation of a protection plan for the area, mainly aimed at preventing forest fires; in addition, the number of signs and information will be increased to prevent risky behaviour from visitors.
