Holiday spending begins on arrival at the airport

SHOPPING: Alicante-Elche passengers start holiday spending at the airport.

INCREASED spending in shops and cafes at Alicante-Elche airport is expected to generate €50 million worth of business this year, making the airport the fifth most profitable commercially after Madrid; Barcelona; Palma and Malaga.
A report says the average amount spent per passenger at the terminal is €44.30, with Norwegians being the biggest spenders along with travellers aged between 30 and 49.
The turnover for this year represents an increase of 10 per cent over last year’s figures and takes into account spending in the restaurants, shops, duty free and car hire.
The terminal receives thousands of passengers each day and directly employs around 3,000 people. It has 20 shops and stores and 19 dining options.
The figures were announced by the commercial director of Aena, the airport management company, as they opened the process to renew the concessions of the companies operating the shops; a process that will culminate in April 2016 with either the granting of new businesses or renewal of licences for a period of five years.
