The local party Izquierda Unida in Velez-Malaga has put forward a motion requesting full guarantees of accessibility for children with disabilities to the town’s children’s parks, so that all of them can enjoy and participate together, boosting integration.
The proposal includes creating a Special Commission, made up by all municipal political forces and members of children and people with disabilities associations, which will ensure accessibility to these facilities, as well as assist the Council in the design of future parks projects.
Spokesperson for IU Miguel Angel Sanchez stressed that it is their intention to adapt at least one park in each district (Velez-Malaga, Torre del Mar, Caleta and Benajarafe) before the end of 2015.
“The right to play was recognised for the first time in 1959 by the United Nations,” said Mr Sanchez: “Adults have the responsibility to facilitate and satisfy all children’s rights, regardless of their disabilities.”
IU explained that this measure would further social justice and the journey of Velez-Malaga to become a “Child-friendly area”, a title bestowed by international organisation Unicef.
