Dramatic forest fire in Granada still blazing

A MAJOR forest fire in the Lujar Mountains (Granada) near the Costa Tropical started on Wednesday has forced the evacuation of more than 600 residents from Lujar, Los Carlos, Orgiva and Rubite.
Residents of Los Carlos and Lujar were taken to the area of Cambriles beach, while 120 from Rubite have spent the night at the sports pavilion of Orgiva. The 80 residents from Los Carlos will be able to go back home today, according to the last statement from the 112 Emergency Services.
The fire started at around 10.20am in a valuable cork oak forest located between Lujar and Gualchos.
Cruz Roja has set up a field hospital in the Cambriles beach to assist Lujar residents, as the town has been severely affected by the smoke.
Work to extinguish the fire is being carried by fire brigades from Motril, Malaga and other municipalities, with the help of amphibious planes sent by the central government from Madrid and Badajoz, as well as several helicopters and other aircrafts.
The roads GR5207 and GR5206, which connect Castell de Ferro and Rubite, have been closed to traffic.
