A PROJECT to build a new train station next to Cartagena’s Mandarache shopping centre has been cancelled by the new council.Mayor Jose Lopez announced that the plans drawn up by the previous council team were not viable due to the high cost involved and said that his team had decided to adapt the existing station to allow for a promised AVE high-speed connection.Adapting the Avenida de Amercia station and the lines to allow the AVE to run to and from the station would cost €7.2 million, while the Mandarache project would cost €95 million, the mayor explained. The council is aiming to have the service running within the next four years, although the mayor said it would hopefully be sooner.
