THREE men have been arrested in connection with the shooting of a nine-year-old girl in Almeria City.
She was near the window of her first-floor home in El Puche when she was caught in crossfire between two rival clans based in the conflictive neighbourhood. Witnesses said later that they heard between seven and nine shots.
The girl, who was wounded in the abdomen, is recovering well after an emergency operation at Torrecardenas hospital and a brief stay in the intensive care unit.
Police arrived almost immediately in El Puche although by then those involved had escaped across the nearby railway line. They were easily identified as two well-known local families with police records for drugs and violence.
A first suspect was arrested two days later in Almeria City and police revealed that he was the owner of a white Porsche seen by witnesses during the shooting. A gun found in the vehicle is being examined by ballistics experts as are bullet holes found in the bodywork.
Police emphasised after the first arrest that the investigation was ongoing and the leads they were following have now resulted in two more arrests. The cause of the gunfight is still unclear although sources believe it was a settling of accounts.
