THE first game of this year’s Wimbledon will begin at 11.30am today (June 29) British Standard Time (BST), with wildcard Briton Liam Broady taking on Aussie Marinko Matosevic on Court 18. Later on, Novak Djokovic begins the defence of his title on Centre Court at 1pm BST, and Serena Williams plays Margarita Gasparyan of Russia on Court One.
Williams has completed half of a Grand Slam this season, with the Australian and French Opens already safely tucked in her kit bag. Wimbledon and the US Open are generally considered her best tournaments, but the world number one says she isn’t feeling any pressure to complete the big four.
It’s nearly 16 years since the US star won her first major title at the US Open in 1999, but there’s no dulling of her ambition, and she says she wants to win her sixth Wimbledon title “probably more than most people would want to win it.”
Andy Murray, Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer and Petra Kvitova are amongst the big names on court on Tuesday.
