Anything Cannes can do, L’Alfaz del Pi Film Festival can do too

ALBIR: Paseo de Fama (Walk of Fame)

THE 27th Film Festival of L’Alfas del Pi will be held from July 3 to12, showcasing 29 feature films and 21 short films, eight of which have been produced locally.
The town’s film festival has become the region’s answer to Cannes and this year, Mayor Vicente Arques has lent his full support to the festival, endorsing the organisation of a number of events that will run parallel to the main feature.
The town is sporting a series of art frescoes that have been created to mark the festival and will remain in place throughout the celebrations.
There’s late night jazz at the Casa de Cultura on Saturday July 4 with the Spirit Rhythm Band, starting at 11.30pm.
There will be a treat for opera buffs on Monday July 6 when ‘A Night at the Opera’ is dedicated to the works of the great Puccini.
On Friday July 10 there will be a big band concert and on Saturday July 11 a rock and roll extravaganza with Pablo Bloom. All details may be found at www.lalfaz.es
Festival Director Javier Pascual said: “The awards for best films are €5,000 and of course the sought after Faro de Plata (Silver Lighthouse statuette). €2,500 is given as a second prize and €1,250 for third, plus another €500 for the most popular film voted for by the public. Cinema photography, actors and actresses are all recognised as well as best director in the true essence of film awards.”
Up for recognition are 29 films, 19 with subtitles. Six are Spanish and there are also four highly recommended documentaries: ‘National Gallery,’ ‘Way to School,’ ‘Citizenfour’ and ‘More Than Honey.’
The festival attracts more interest each year and now even has its own ‘Walk of Fame’ – the ‘Paseo de Fama’ can be seen on the promenade next to Albir’s sandy beach.
