Illegal boats hurting Island business, owners claim

SEVERAL boat rental companies have drawn attention to 1,000 crafts they say are being illegally rented in the Balearic Islands.
The Provincial Association of Maritime Activities Businesses (APEAM) says it suspects most of the illegal boats have come from abroad.
Head of the association’s Commission for Nautical Charters, Jose Maria Jimenez, claimed that legal businesses in the Islands offering boat rental services are having financial trouble due to unfair competition from unauthorised agents.
Mr Jimenez explained that the cost of maintaining these businesses was very high, and unauthorised owners who come from abroad do not have to face the taxes and expenses related to legally renting boats.
These owners offered lower rental prices, he claimed, and caused competitiveness problems for legal, local businesses as, Mr Jimenez said, it was very difficult to compete within the same market under a different set of rules.
