LOS GENOVESES: Worth protecting

SUMMER is here and vehicle access to beaches in the Cabo de Gata national park is once again restricted.
Until September 20 the regional government’s Environment department is allowing only 500 vehicles to park at beaches between Playa de los Genoveses and Cala Carbon.
To compensate for the transport restrictions, a car park is now operating at the Monsul, Genoveses and Barronal beaches, with some spaces reserved for those with mobility problems.
Parking is charged between 8am and 7pm at a daily rate of €5 for each vehicle. Once the car park is full the barrier has to come down but is raised periodically to allow more cars in as others leave.
There is also a bus service to the beaches that operates a round trip starting and ending in San Jose with tickets costing €2 and singles €1.50. There are reductions of between 20 and 50 per cent for large families and pensioners from now until September 20.
