Specsavers Opticas Santa Ponça hosts fundraising fun day for kidney research

KIDNEY disease affects one in 10 people in Europe, but many people do not know they have it or that they are even at risk. There is a huge shortage of donors in the UK and a long wait on the organ donor list for those that do need a new kidney.

Martin Blake, Store Director of Specsavers Opticas in Santa Ponça, recently helped his brother-in-law by donating one of his kidneys, and thanks to him his brother-in-law no longer requires dialysis and is recovering well from the operation.

As a result of his brother-in-law’s illnesses and Martin’s experience, he has decided to raise money for Kidney Research UK and the Spanish Kidney Disease Association ALCER to help people unable to get a donor to beat this disease.

To start his fundraising campaign Martin is holding an event at Specsavers Opticas in Santa Ponça on June 27 from 10am to 2pm. There will be refreshments, live music from Bossa band Yemanja and healthy smoothies in return for a donation.

To make guests look and feel great, Carlos Martin Peluquero will be running makeup workshops and the Specsavers team will be offering glasses styling and an opportunity to enter the Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards. There will also be a Prize Draw to win a weekend stay at a holiday apartment in Puerto Pollenca and representatives from ALCER will be offering information and advice about kidney disease.

From June 27 until the end of July, the fundraising will continue in store. Specsavers are currently offering free eye tests so customers will be encouraged to donate to charity, with wristbands and pins available to buy in store. All funds collected will be split between Kidney Research UK and ALCER Spain.
