‘Not in our backyards’ plea

BERJA residents are petitioning to close down a ‘Punto Limpio’ recycling site.
Located in the Las Cañadas area three kilometres from the town, the recycling centre accepts old furniture, used oil, household appliances and other items not accepted at normal recycling containers.
So far 200 Berja residents have signed the petition which they intend to present to the regional government, expressing their “total rejection” of the plant. The document calls for the courts and the administration to close it down as it has no licence and is illegal, claimed Francisco Martin, who organised the petition.
He lives near the Punto Limpio and its presence has made him consider moving. “On windy days rubbish from the centre blows into our properties,” said Martin. “It is also a hazard because it attracts a lot of people who come to steal items left there and then there’s the smell and the noise.”
The recycling centre occupies a 10,000-square-metre site and belongs to a local businessman who habitually declares himself bankrupt and changes the name of his companies, Martin added.
