THE Instituto Andaluz de la Mujer (IAM) assisted 27 minors subjected to sexist abuse between 2012 and 2014.
The region’s Institute for Women recently issued a guide for parents with adolescent daughters who are or have been victims of gender violence. “It is intended to help Andalucia families detect this type of abuse in time and, above all, to know how to react,” said Carme Cuella, the IAM director.
The IAM has attended to 202 adolescents in Andalucia since the programme was launched and records show that 71 per cent of the girls had suffered both psychological and physical violence. Eight per cent were subjected to sexual abuse.
As well as advice, the handbook gives contact details for sources of help. These include IAM provincial branches; the national 016 helpline in 52 languages and the Junta’s 900 200 999 helpline for women.
