Survivors of domestic violence lead walk through Alhaurin el Grande

MORE than 160 people came out to walk, support and raise awareness of AMUSUVIG, the Association of Women Survivors of Domestic Violence, on Friday June 5. Starting at the feria ground in Alhaurin el Grande, 40 women of AMUSUVIG led the walk with their children into the streets where they took donations along the way from the local bars and restaurants.
The theme was white and purple and some ladies wore butterfly wings, as the walk was named the Caminata de Mariposa. This was the first event in Alhaurin el Grande where the group have now firmly established good relations with the local government.
The Caminata was an idea of the group of Coffee Break for Women Inland, under the leadership of Carol Engelmann, to help the survivors of domestic violence and their children. They have been helping with donations, clothing, furniture, toiletries and sanitary goods since December last year.
AMUSUVIG would like to thank the whole community of Alhaurin El Grande for allowing this walk to take place in peace and for the cooperation of many shops, restaurants and bars in putting up their posters. They also give thanks to the councillor for Culture, Education and Equality for obtaining the permission for the walk, and also the sponsors.
