ALHAMA DE ALMERIA intends to apply for Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) for locally-produced breadsticks.
Rather than sticks, local Alhama rosquillas resemble elongated loops and the PGI designation would guarantee their characteristics and reputation are inseparable from their place of origin.
Twenty Alhama business-owners attended a meeting to discuss PGI with the regional government’s acting Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment delegate, Adriana Valverde.
Several Andalucia food products now have PGI, said Valverde, who encouraged other Alhama businesses to apply for PGI.
“Consumers associate the label with an area and that attracts visitors, leading to more business and morejobs,” the delegate pointed out.
