THE Catalan public health authorities have discovered traces of the diphtheria bacteria present in eight children who had previously become into contact with a six-year-old boy from Girona, who is suffering from the disease. The boy, who was confirmed as having contracted the disease last week, is said to be stable but in a very serious condition at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona. He had not been given any vaccinations because of his parents’ wishes.Speaking on Monday, the health chief for the region, Boi Ruiz, said the eight children in question “had not developed the disease thanks to them having been vaccinated,” but that they had been confined to their homes in order to prevent them infecting the 3 per cent of children in the Garrotxa area who had not been vaccinated.
