THE service for contamination prevention and cleaning of water and beaches on the Balearic Islands eliminated 14,131 kilos of waste in May.The service, which became operational on May 1, is being carried out by the Balearic Agency for Water and Environment Quality (ABAQUA), with the help of 33 ships that sail along the coasts to remove solid waste from the water, prevent contamination, preserve the water’s quality and contribute to the safety of swimmers and sunbathers.The 15 boats in charge of the service in Mallorca eliminated 7,188 kilos of waste during May, the most common residues being plastics (35.7 per cent), wood (34.8), followed by algae (13.5) and organics (9.6 per cent).The service will run for a total of five months, until September 30.
