AROUND 70 beds will be closed at Elche’s General Hospital for the summer. The reduction in the number of available beds happens each year in a bid to trim costs and staffing expenses during the holidays and this year, beds on the third floor dedicated to surgery patients will be closed along with a wing on the fifth floor.Surgical activity and outpatient clinics will be reduced until October when the hospital will return to its normal activity. The bed closures are met with some complaints each year as citizens struggle to understand how a hospital can run a limited service, particularly when there are people on hospital waiting lists.
