TOWNS across the Costa Tropical are celebrating as summer temperatures and high occupancy levels seem to have arrived earlier than ever.Hundreds of tourists and locals were able to have a taste of the upcoming season last weekend, to the delight of business owners who saw hotel occupancy rates reach figures between 80 and 90 per cent.“Between May 29 and 30, we have registered an occupancy of up to 90 per cent,” said head of the Costa Hotel businesses association, Rafael Lamelas. He continued: “We believe these figures are linked to different sports events being held in Almuñecar and Motril, as well as the opening of beach bars with their traditional fish ‘espetos’ cooked over an open flame.”The festivities of Corpus Christi in Granada City have also been accredited as contributing to such positive numbers.“We have registered an increase in bookings via the internet from Granada residents who wish to ‘run away’ from the Corpus festivities,” explained Mr Lamelas. “We are expecting a large number of tourists to arrive during the next few days, at least until June 5. It is hoped that the occupancy rate will not sit lower than 75 per cent.”
