Locals in Nerja oppose massive urban development

PEOPLE in Nerja have created a platform against the construction of 1,880 new homes in the areas of Maro and El Playazo.
The council has signed an agreement with a private company to build 680 new properties in Maro and 1,200 in El Playazo, on land that is currently used for agricultural purposes.
Members of this pressure group have already presented arguments against the project, claiming it would only contribute to the disappearance of the already scarce local agricultural activity.
“Due to their magnitude, these kinds of projects should be discussed without the participation of all citizens,” said one of the members, Jorge Alaminos, to Spanish daily SUR. “The council has presented the project as the best future possible. However these developments based fundamentally on construction were the ones that lead us to the crisis and the collapse of the housing bubble.”
Mr Alaminos claimed that projects like these would destroy the Nerja’s attraction for tourists, based on its unspoiled nature, its landscapes and the fact that it is not yet densely built-up.
