A CONVICTED armed robber who claims to have simply, ‘walked out’ of an English prison is reported to be in hiding in Marbella.Haroon Ahmed, 26, told the Sunday Mirror that it was “easy” to escape from HMP Dovegate, a privately run prison in Staffordshire, in amongst a group of visitors.“I wanted to test out the security,” he told the paper. “I thought, I’ll give it a go, and walked out the door. That’s how easy it was. I just kept on walking.”Since his casual escape, Ahmed is reported to have travelled to the Costa del Sol, where he has received legal advice from Jason Coghlan of JaCogLaw. Coghlan says he has advised Ahmed to hand himself in, but also condemned the prison’s lax security:“I also invite the governor to take some responsibility. I would invite him to step down over this.“This young lad is in the process of being rehabilitated and they have failed in their duty of care to him. ”“He was in custody because he is inherently dishonest, yet they have allowed him to walk out the front door. I want them and the governor to accept that failure.”Michael Guy, director of HMP Dovecote, which has recently been criticised by inspectors over staffing levels, said the escape was being taken “extremely seriously,” and an investigation had been launched.Ahmed and an accomplice were convicted of robbing a garage of £500, threatening the cashier with a knife.British Police have arrested and charged Ahmed’s brother with assisting the escape. They ask anyone with information on Haroon Ahmed’s whereabouts to contact Staffordshire Police, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org/
