JELLYFISH: nets will protect swimmers and keep jellyfish from reaching the shoreline

OVER 50 kilometres of protective nets have been installed along the Mar Menor to protect swimmers from jellyfish.
The Murcia Regional Government takes steps every summer to limit disruption to bathers from jellyfish and has this year installed the nets earlier than normal. They will remain in place until the end of September.
Many nets will be renewed or replaced this summer as the regional government also carried out studies to access the jellyfish population of the Mar Menor and analyse the numbers and their sizes, weight and maturity.
The results of these studies will determine if any jellyfish fishing programmes are put in place as they are only carried out if the Mar Menor’s ecosystem is at risk due to overpopulation.
