OUTSTANDING: Sanchez and Giroud celebrate

ARSENAL’S Alexis Sanchez was the stand-out star in fantastic team performance as the Gunners left Aston Villa floundering. For almost the full 90 minutes, there was little doubt that Arsenal would be lifting the FA Cup this afternoon for the 12th time. Four goals later, including Sanchez’s wonder shot, the Londoners were the beyond-worthy, record-breaking winners.
Arsenal never let up, but it took 40 minutes of pressure before Theo Walcott, who Arsene Wenger had reportedly considered leaving out the starting 11 today, netted the first. Then ten minutes later Chilean Sanchez left everyone breathless with a curving, 25-yard shot, and Villa keeper Shay Given had no chance of stopping the second goal.
The third came from a header by Mertesacker, and while Villa fans, who numbered Prince William amongst their ranks, kept singing, the team looked broken. The salt in their wounds was Giroud’s injury time tap-in to make it 4-0.
The trophy was in the Gunners’ pocket throughout, but fans nonetheless cherished the presentation, as a gutted-looking Prince handed over the silverware to Wenger’s jubilant men.
