MORE than 30 students from the Costa Blanca-based Washinkai España karate club participated in a two-day course on May 16 and 17 with Shihan Chris Thompson, Eighth Dan, founder and chief instructor for Washinkai Karate.
The ‘Gasshuku’ focused on all aspects of Washinkai Karate techniques. The training sessions began Friday morning with a special class for black belts, continuing throughout Friday afternoon and Saturday for students of all ages and from all belt levels from within the Washinkai España club.
Founded in 1977, the British Traditional Karate Association (BTKA) has been at the forefront of Karate in the UK for 30 years, members of the only governing body in English karate to be recognised by the World Karate Federation. Chris Thompson started karate in 1969 under Tatsuo Suzuki, who brought Wado to Europe directly from Japan. A national champion, he represented England on many occasions.
Classes for adults and children are held every week in Javea Sports Centre, Xabia International College and also in Benitachell at Lady Elizabeth Primary and CP Maria Magdalena. Details are available at www.washinkai.org
New students are welcome throughout the year and the club also offers a trial class for free.
