Call to reinstate strays weekend collection

STRAYS: A place in the Almeria sun.

THE Huella Roja animal protection society has called for better conditions at the Zoosanitario centre in Almeria City.
The centre needs more resources and staff, said Huella Roja (Red Pawprint) in a formal letter to Almeria Council.
The association is also withholding judgement over City Hall’s promise that abandoned animals will once again be collected at weekends. This service was suspended on May 1 and Huella Roja said it intends to wait and see whether or not this is a hollow election campaign promise.
Not only Huella Roja but also the UPLBA union which represents the Local Police and firefighters complained about the suspension.
City Hall is now committed to restoring the previous Zoosanitario 8am to 10pm, Monday to Friday timetable. Nonetheless, even these opening hours are insufficient, Huella Roja claimed. The association also asked City Hall to modify the municipal bylaw barring potentially dangerous animals from the centre. This inevitably leads to more animals being put down, a spokesperson said.
